The Toyota RAV4 remains the most sought-after car among thieves. In the first half of 2024, the RAV4 was stolen 195 times. That's more than one per day.
Even though the total number of stolen Toyotas has decreased (443 this year, compared to 611 during the same period last year), the brand still tops the list. Volkswagen, however, is making a small comeback. In the first half of 2024, 11 more Volkswagens were stolen than in the first half of 2023.
Here is the current top 5 of the most stolen models in The Netherlands:
1. Toyota RAV4: 195
2. Volkswagen Polo: 165
3. Volkswagen Golf: 137
4. Toyota CHR: 99
5. Fiat 500: 61
Of the 3,094 stolen passenger vehicles, only 1,954 were recovered. That's 63%. The recovery rate was slightly higher a year earlier: 65%.
With the certified Tracer (SCM Class TV) from Moving Intelligence, you can increase the chances of recovering your vehicle after theft to 94%. This also applies abroad!
When not tracked in time, stolen Toyota vehicles often end up in Africa, with Germany serving as an important transit hub. The RAV4s and other models are in high demand in Africa due to a large network for parts distribution. The RAV4, in particular, is relatively easy to steal and therefore often ends up in a container on a large cargo ship.
Car security and recovery systems are not only for new cars. Statistics show that vehicles manufactured between 2017 and 2021 are particularly popular targets for theft. Among these, 2019 models are the most sought-after, yet the recovery rate for these cars is relatively low: 51%. Therefore, it’s also important to invest in good security and a certified recovery system for slightly older vehicles.
The figures come from the Landelijk Intelligence- en expertisecentrum Voertuigcriminaliteit (LIV), the collaboration between the RDW, police and Stichting Verzekeringsbureau Voertuigcriminaliteit (VbV).
