Land Rover theft rises by 21%, security is crucial

Land Rovers remain as popular as ever. Not only among car enthusiasts, but unfortunately also among car thieves. In the first six months of 2026, 47 Land Rovers were stolen in the Netherlands. That is an increase of 21% compared to the same period last year, according to figures from the VbV Foundation.

It is striking that criminals are not exclusively targeting the newest models. Land Rovers ten years and older are also being successfully stolen. Good, independently certified vehicle security therefore remains important, even when an insurer no longer explicitly requires it for an older model. The theft figures show that it is not only brand-new, very expensive models that are at risk. It is precisely models that have been on the road for several years that frequently appear in the statistics.

The three most stolen Land Rover models in the first half of 2026 are:

Range Rover Sport (LW/E3) model years September 2013 to September 2022

This model was stolen 12 times. That amounts to an average of 2 successful thefts per month.

Range Rover (L460) model years from January 2022
9 units of the current generation Range Rover were stolen.

Range Rover Evoque Hatchback (LV) model years September 2011 to February 2019

The Evoque was stolen 6 times.

The proportion of older models is an important signal. Additional security requirements are often imposed when purchasing or insuring a new Land Rover. With older cars, these requirements may lapse over time, for example, because the current market value decreases. However, this does not mean that the interest of criminals is diminishing as well. On the contrary, because malicious actors also know that the requirements may lapse, they estimate the chances of a theft to be higher.

Land Rovers remain expensive and internationally sought-after cars. Individual parts also represent a high value. As a result, older models can still be an attractive target.

Many insurers require an SCM Class 4, SCM Class 5, and/or SCM Class TV system for a Land Rover. Which security class is required depends, among other things, on the model, the value of the car, and the insurer's terms and conditions.

An SCM Class 4 or Class 5 vehicle tracking system detects sabotage and unauthorized movement of the car, among other things. Notifications are forwarded to a Private Alarm Center so that immediate action can be taken following an alarm.

An SCM Class TV tracking device forms an additional, independent layer of security. This wireless transmitter is not connected to the car's electronics or factory-installed system and can be hidden in various locations. If criminals disable or remove the regular security, this additional retrieval option remains available.

This is particularly relevant for Land Rovers. The factory-installed tracking system is built into every vehicle according to a similar principle. Experienced car thieves can specifically target that. An independently installed system is much harder to locate and sabotage.
